UN Global Compact Network Singapore recognises 8 companies for sustainable innovations and business practices at the Singapore Apex Corporate Sustainability Awards 2021

9 December 2021, Singapore – UN Global Compact Network Singapore announced the winners for the Singapore Apex Corporate Sustainability Awards at a ceremony held at The Fullerton Hotel today. The winning companies were presented with awards by Guest of Honour Mr Lawrence Wong, Minister for Finance.

Organised by UN Global Compact Network Singapore (GCNS), the local chapter of the United Nations Global Compact, the Awards represent the most prestigious form of recognition for companies in Singapore on corporate sustainability.

The annual event recognises Singapore-based companies whose business operations or solutions have demonstrated excellence in embodying the Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact, in the areas of environment, human rights, labour and anti-corruption.

This year, there are a total of 8 winners from the two respective award categories:

Sustainable Business Category: companies that demonstrate excellence in implementing sustainable business practices within the core operations.
Non-SMEs1. Banyan Tree Group 2. Royal DSM 3. Keppel Corporation (Apex Winner)
SMEs1. DTC World Corporation Pte Ltd
Sustainable Solutions Category: companies that excel in developing products or services that address the sustainability needs of other businesses, the environment and society.
Non-SMEs1. Azbil Corporation 2. United Overseas Bank (Apex Winner)
SMEs1. GUAVA Amenities Pte Ltd 2. TES-AMM (Singapore) Pte Ltd

Of the 8 winners, United Overseas Bank and Keppel Corporation were accorded an additional title of Apex Winner for their respective award categories. The Apex Winner title is only accorded to a company when there is unanimous agreement among the judging panel whether the particular company deserves the title based on the quality of applications for that year.

Mr Loh Chin Hua, CEO of Keppel Corporation, said, “Keppel is honoured to be recognised by UN Global Compact Network Singapore for our sustainability efforts. Mr Wee Ee Cheong, Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, UOB, said, “At UOB, our sustainability strategy mirrors our business approach of balancing growth with responsibility. Acting as a catalyst and enabler, we work closely with our ecosystem partners and customers to help shape behaviours. Our U-Solar programme, which promotes the adoption of solar power, is one example of our progressive, end-to-end solutions that aim to simplify sustainability for our customers. We are honoured that U-Solar is recognised at the Singapore Apex Corporate Sustainability Awards. We continue to generate long-term value for our customers and communities to forge a sustainable future together.”

Awards applicants underwent a robust evaluation. With a total of 44 registrations received, preliminary evaluations were conducted via the Responsibility Index Communicator for Enterprises (RICE) Tool. Designed and developed by GCNS, RICE has built-in performance scoring that quantifies a company’s sustainability efforts against key international sustainability standards. Based on RICE scores, representatives from GCNS and Awards Knowledge Partners – Frost & Sullivan and KPMG – conducted verification site visits for 15 applicants.

12 finalists were evaluated by a distinguished panel of industry leaders and sustainability experts:

  • Mr Lam Yi Young, Chief Executive Officer, Singapore Business Federation (SBF)
  • Mr Kevin Teo, Chief Operating Officer, Asian Venture Philanthropy Network (AVPN)
  • Prof Annie Koh, Professor Emeritus of Finance (Practice), Senior Academic Advisor, Business Families Institute and International Trading Institute, Singapore Management University
  • Ms Herry Cho, Managing Director, Head of Sustainability and Sustainable Finance, Singapore Exchange (SGX)
  • Mr Sim Gim Guan, Executive Director, Singapore National Employers Federation
  • Ms Heng Li Lang, Principal Senior Director, Temasek Foundation
  • Mr Ian Hong, Partner, Audit, Sustainability Services, KPMG IMPACT, KPMG Singapore
  • Mr Ravi Krishnaswamy, Senior Vice President, Frost & Sullivan
  • Prof Vladan Babovic, Associate Professor Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, National University of Singapore

Ms Goh Swee Chen, President, GCNS, said, “We commend the winners of the Singapore Apex Corporate Sustainability Awards 2021. With sustainability increasingly becoming the key to lasting competitive advantage, we hope that the winners’ strategies and efforts will inspire others to build their sustainability practices.”

In an accompanying fireside chat, Guest of Honour Mr Lawrence Wong, Minister of Finance, spoke about how Singapore is working towards a sustainable post-pandemic future, and how the Government, businesses and individuals can collaborate towards this goal.

For each of the Sustainability Awards sub-categories, a maximum of 3 winners can be selected. Of these 3 winners, 1 winner may be awarded an additional title of being the Apex Winner for that year.

The Apex Winner award is only accorded to a company when there is unanimous agreement among the judging panel whether the company deserves the title based on the quality of applications for that year.
